Tell me a bit about yourself:
I am a wife and mommy of one to a busy, but amazing little 2-year-old boy. I have lived in Somerset West with my husband for 9 years and love this “not so little” town. I have been a travel consultant for 11 years of which I have worked for myself for almost 3 years now.
Where did your business idea / business opportunity come from?
I worked in a retail shop for 8 years, and then took some time off to try and fall pregnant. After 2 years, many doctors, injections and blood tests I finally fell pregnant through IVF. Just after Caleb was born I knew that I would want to get back into travel. I didn’t want to go back to retail hours and the demands of running a shop, but I still wanted to do what I know and love, and that is to serve people and help them realize their travel dreams. That is when I started to research Independent Travel Consultants and what it would take to work for myself. I came across Travel Counsellors which is an amazing global company that assists senior consultants to set up and run their business from home.
How do you juggle mom life and your business?
I think it just takes focus and discipline with time management. My first priority is my family and my life revolves around them, so juggling is something that occurs on a daily basis! The beauty of working for myself is developing great relationships with my clients. All of them know that I am a mom and have a little boy, so they are understanding when life happens and I need to take him for swimming lessons, or for a play date or to the doctor. I just make sure that I am always available and try to be as quick and thorough with my work for them.
What do you do to relax?
My ultimate is a good series, and a glass of wine 😊 But I also enjoy gym, being out in nature, whether it is a walk in my estate or on the beach- some fresh air with a view in my opinion is the zenith of relaxing!
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Italy! I would love to visit the old ruins in Rome, eat Pizza in Naples, view the Amalfi coast from a cruise boat, drive through the vineyards (and stop of course) in Florence, shop til my feet ache in Milan and then end it in Venice with a romantic Gondola ride and dinner for 2 at a small side walk restaurant…. That’s where I would go….
What advice would you give to other moms wanting to venture out on a business idea / opportunity
Just do it, start somewhere, anywhere, but do it! If you have a passion and think you can – then YOU CAN! It takes guts, and it’s terrifying, but there is nothing more rewarding then having something that you built. Confidence is something that can be taught, even if you are the shyest person you know, all you need to do is start to speak to one person about your idea, and then go for it. It won’t be long before you will look back and see how much you have learnt about yourself. We owe it to our kiddies, to show them that we aren’t just their mommies, but we are their Super Mommies, and with a little determination anything can be possible!!
What is your best “mom moment”
Mmm apart from the “palm to face mom moment” of forgetting nappies and wipes on an outing with friends to a super fancy restaurant when he was just six months old (rookie mistake) I think my favourite “mom moment” has to be when I lie in bed with him at night and read him a story before he goes to sleep, and he looks at me and says… “I love you”! No words can describe the fullness of my heart in that moment!
