If you think that the good wines of South Africa end at the Huguenot Tunnel, you would be forgiven. I would be kidding if I said otherwise; yet on a hot Wednesday afternoon, we crossed through the tunnel and found ourselves at Overhex Wines, in the town of Worcester.
Now, Overhex is not your typical 'wine estate'. They buy grapes in from all over the Western Cape and are home to 'Survivor Wines' and 'Balance Wines', to name just two. Since its launch more than 10 years ago, Overhex has become a major player among South Africa’s new-generation wine companies. Both brands offer wine lovers extremely easy drinking wine, from a fresh Sauvignon Blanc to a beautiful Pinotage. With prices ranging from R40 a bottle to a mere R140 a bottle, which are available at Checkers* and Makro*, you can enjoy these wines anytime.
*please note, these stores may not stock all the wines
Perhaps you are now wondering, why the two totally different names?
Well, the 'story' of Survivor Wines goes, "One fine day, as a truck laden with cattle rattled past our Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, one of the passengers decided The Cow Stops Here. She jumped. Not only did she survive, but she has thrived, and even produced several offspring. Because she embodies the free spirit of the Swartland, these wines pay tribute to our noble Nguni* cow, Survivor. Survivor's descendants have all gone looking for greener pastures, carrying their mother's adventurous spirit wherever they roam. Survivor Offspring salutes her feisty calves."
Based on a charming anecdote to embody the place of origin: the famous Swartland

Balance Wines - "Yin and Yang…Up and down. This way and that. Life’s a juggle, and staying ahead means you have to balance a thousand things. Are your scales starting to tip? Balance is one of South Africa’s hip, hop and happening wines. Fresh as the rainbow nation, here’s a fun and fruity wine range to restore your happy equilibrium."
The Balance wine range was launched in 2004 with the aim to establish a lively, consumer-driven brand with a global appeal. Thanks to the international success of the Balance wines (previously Balance Classic), the range has since been extended to include two sub-ranges:
Balance Bubbly and Balance Winemaker’s Selection
Balance is part of our everyday life: balance in life, finances, wine, physical and mental, etc
Philosophical concept consumers can relate to with a funny twist.
Stylish but fun label puts a smile on consumer’s face.
